Delivering natural-looking results with botox and filler in Kamloops and Kelowna, BC.
In my industry, there is some controversy about Naturopathic Doctors offering cosmetic injections, that I really don’t understand. As an ND, it’s my responsibility to address my patients holistically, which includes both emotionally and physically. And how we feel about our appearance can have an undoubtedly large impact on how we live our daily lives.
While I don’t believe anyone needs filler or botox, if they choose to get it I would rather it be with an individual who is medically trained and has a strong understanding of facial anatomy. Cosmetic injections also come with some highly effective therapeutic benefits for conditions such as bruxism or migraines, which align with my philosophy as a ND—you do not have to live in discomfort.
With that being said, I take a more natural approach to those seeking cosmetic injections for aesthetics purposes and would like to take this opportunity to break down what to expect when booking botox or filler with me in Kelowna or Kamloops, BC.
What are cosmetic injections?
When we talk about cosmetic injections, we’re typically referring to treatments such as neuromodulators (commonly known as botox) and dermal fillers. Botox is a wrinkle relaxer that can soften the look of wrinkles by temporarily preventing the contraction of the muscles that create creases in the skin, which eventually form static wrinkles. While we will often default to saying botox, really Botox Cosmetic® is one brand of neuromodulator—Dysport®, Xeomin® and (coming soon) DAXXIFY® are other common brands.
Dermal fillers work differently than neuromodulators as their primary purpose is to restore volume in areas of the face where it has been lost due to aging, giving a youthful, rejuvenated appearance. There are a few filler brands to choose from on the market, but my preferred brands are Revanesse® and Sculptra® for their natural-looking, consistent results.
Part of the reason I believe there is still a stigma around Naturopathic Doctors offering patients cosmetic injections is the misconception that those who choose to receive cosmetic injections appear “fake” and do not “age gracefully.” In my experience and the experiences of patients over the last four years, this is not the reality of cosmetic injections—when done properly of course. When managed conservatively and while using the proper technique, botox and filler can help you address your concerns while still looking like you. That all being said, there are some people I would never recommend or treat with botox or filler.
Who shouldn’t receive cosmetic injections?
Botox and filler treatments are not for everyone. If any of the following statements apply to you, I do not recommend getting cosmetic injections with me, or any cosmetic injection provider.
You are pregnant or breastfeeding
If you have a neuromuscular disorder
If you are allergic to botox (this is rare, but it’s best to consult with your family doctor prior to booking your first appointment)
If you intend to be on an airplane in the next week
If you have an active cold sore (lip filler specific)
If you have dental work scheduled within the next two weeks
If you have any big events (such as a wedding) booked within the next two weeks
If you’ll be in the the direct sunlight in the upcoming week (sun exposure can cause bruising of the injection site)
You feel forced or aren’t sure if you really want them
The last point is one I like to stress to my patients. Like with any procedure, there will always be risk involved with choosing to get cosmetic injections. If you aren’t convinced you fully want to try botox and/or filler, then hold off. I always start my appointments with a consultation to discuss your concerns and your treatment options. If you aren’t comfortable moving ahead with the injections, there is no pressure to continue.
What is your approach to cosmetic injections?
Just like in the Naturopathic Medicine side of my practice, my mission is to empower patients through education. In both my Kamloops and Kelowna locations, I focus on providing my patients all the information they need to make informed decisions about their body. Rather than telling any individual “what they need,” I listen to their concerns and provide possible options that can help. Ultimately, it’s your body and I am here to provide science-based information and the non-judgement space you need to decide what is right for you.
However, that does not mean my patients will choose the number of botox units or number of dermal filler syringes they receive—at least not entirely. With my approach to cosmetic injections guided by natural-looking results, I am not opposed to telling my patients ‘no’ if they ask for too much product, too fast.
With every consultation, my goal is to listen, understand, and provide a tailored treatment plan that aligns with each patient’s aesthetic goals while honouring their overall well-being. While cosmetic injections might not be the right choice for everyone, for those who do choose this path, it can be an empowering part of their journey to self-confidence.
What results can I expect with dermal filler?
Dermal fillers can be used in all areas of the face to increase volume, but the most common areas I tend to treat patients are:
Lips – enhances lip volume, addresses lip asymmetries
Chin – creates profile balance, reduces the appearance of a receding chin
Jawline – defines the jawline and helps prevent sagging skin
Cheeks – helps to lift the cheek bones for a more youthful appearance
For each area treated, a different type of dermal filler is used. As mentioned, I trust Revanesse® as my primary hyaluronic acid dermal filler brand. There are several types of Revanesse® (Revanesse® Kiss, Revanesse® Ultra, Revanesse® Shape, Revanesse® Contour, etc.) all with unique formulas best suited to treat a specific area. Since every individual is unique, results do vary. Depending on the individual and treatment area, you can expect results to last between three and 12 months.
I often get asked “How many syringes of filler will I need?” And my response is always the same: you don’t need any; however, when first starting out with filler (especially for the lips) I tend to recommend using just a half syringe (or 0.6 ml) of product. It’s better to build volume slowly as this way, we have more control over the placement and can reduce the risk of filler migration.
As you can see by some of my patient transformations below, the dermal filler results you will achieve with me, are simply an enhancement of your already beautiful, natural features. Although I used the same product and product amount for many of the below lip augmentation transformations, the results variy from individual to individual.
What results to expect from botox?
Over the last decade, there has been increasing demand for botox in Kamloops in Kelowna. It’s important to remember that the decision to get cosmetic injections should come from a place of empowerment and choice, not as a result of societal pressures.
The muscle relaxer is known for its effectiveness in temporarily smoothing the fine lines of the forehead, reducing the prominence of crow’s feet and treating the glabellar lines (also known as the frowner or the 11’s).
Typically, botox results last three months, but some patients will experience the effects lasting even longer. I often use Dysport as my go-to neuromodulator brand, but depending on the individual, they may find other brands more effective. If you are concerned about your tolerance with a specific brand, please let me know and we can work together to ensure we have the most effective products for you at the ready.
The number of botox units will vary depending on the severity of wrinkles and the strength of the muscle. That being said, there are minimum, best practice requirements for each treatment area that we must adhere to. Prior to beginning your injections, we will discuss the treatment areas and the recommended number of units so you are completely comfortable before we begin.
